Camry vs. Accord

One of your leading Portland Maine Toyota dealers, Berlin City Toyota, is proud to announce that we finally have the 2012 Camry in stock.  Now, we would like to do a little comparison against its biggest rival; the 2012 Honda Accord.

The two sedans have had the customers flocking around them with their every new release for years together. They have ruled the economy class sedan segment for over a decade now. With the new 2012 edition of both these super sedans, once again the war is wide open. Once again we have the same old question- which one is better? Camry or Accord?

We try to answer all these questions here, as we get into the thick of the big Toyota Camry versus Honda Accord fight.

Introduction of the Sedans

The 2012 Camry:

The 2012 Accord:

Both the Japanese sedans offer seating for 5 passengers. On the inside we see, Accord offering more interior room thanks to the overall length of the vehicle, which is more than its rival. On the downside, the longer sedan becomes difficult to get parked, especially in those small European garages; having said that both these sedans have a huge worldwide market and are not limited to any one continent.

Despite the short length of Camry, it manages to give more cargo room than the other Japanese. This one has 15.0 cubic feet of cargo room as compared to Accord's 14.7cubic feet.

One thing that we miss in Camry line up is a coupe model, which would have made the entire line all the more versatile, and this is where the Honda sedan gets some extra points as it has a stylish Accord coupe in the line.

Engine Performance

Both the sedans have V6 engines under their hoods. The regular 4 cylinder V6 offers 190hp in Accord, while the higher 3.5liter V6 can generate 271hp. The 2.5liter 4 cylinder engine in Camry produces 169hp and the bigger 3.5liter can generate 268hp. So we see that power wise both the sedans are more or less similar, but the real difference comes in the form of a 6 speed automatic gearbox that is mated to Camry's engines.  This option gives On the other hand Accord has either a 5-speed automatic or a 5 speed manual transmission.

Which is More Thirsty?

Accord hardly manages to get a leg up in this department, though the EPA numbers of both the sedans are identical. The 4 cylinder engines in the Honda sedan provide 23mpg/34mpg for city/highway, while the V6 offers 20mpg/30mpg. Camry is not far behind with its 4 cylinder offering 22mpg/32mpg and the V6 offering 20mpg/29mpg. To make things better in this department, there also is a hybrid version included in Camry's line up.

The Safer Sedan is?

Both the elite sedans come with safety features like anti-lock disc brakes, electronic stability systems and all the safety airbags. The Toyota sedan has an extra knee airbag for the driver. Accord got a full-five star in terms of safety by NHTSA, while Camry received just 3 stars. So now we know which one is safer.

The Cabin

Both the sedans have similar level of features like auxiliary audio input jack, air conditioning, power windows and locks, folding rear seats and cruise control. Optional features on both include Bluetooth connectivity, rear view cameras, automatic climate control and navigation system.

A closer look inside might indicate that Accord is more modern on dash, which is full of latest instrumentation, while the 2012 Toyota Camry keeps it simple and classy, especially at the center of the dash. The material finishing is too good in Accord and it looks more of Acura than Honda. On the other hand Camry includes an auto up/down for all its windows, which is normally seen in up class luxury sedans.

Overall both the sedans are different on the inside and indicate towards a different genre, and thus we feel that we cannot compare Honda Accord and Toyota Camry directly here, as it eventually comes down to the matter of choice. It depends on the user if he/she likes the clustered sporty interior of Accord or serene and classy interior of Camry.

Affordability

Camry for 2012 is to be marketed in 4 distinct trim levels; L, LE, SE and XLE. The entry level L has an MSRP tag of $21,955 while the MSRP tops out at $24,725 for the top end XLE. There are two hybrid variants as well joining the line. They are LE and XLE and their MSRPs are $25,900 and $27,400 respectively.
